Description
Rome, Italy. Ponte Sisto. Ponte Sisto is the only Roman bridge built between the Ancient Roman age and the XIX century. It was built exploiting the remains of an ancient Roman bridge, identified variously as the Ponte di Agrippa (Vipsanio Agrippa, before 12 b.C.), the Ponte Aurelio (Antoninus Pius, 147) or the Ponte di Antonino (Marco Aurelio Antonino also known as Caracalla). Restored in 366 - 367 under emperor Valentinian (Valentinianus), the bridge crumbled probably during the flood of 589, to assume the name "Ponte Rotto", "Ponte Tremulo" or "Ponte Gianicolense". The present bridge was built possibly by Baccio Pontelli in 1473 - 75 under pope Sixtus IV Della Rovere. In the past when the water reached the "Occhialone" at the center - the circular hole which serves the purpose of facilitating the flow of water in case of flood - it meant that the river was outside of his bed in some other parts of Rome.
