Description
Rome, Italy. Detail with mascaron and sea monsters on the Fontana del Moro in piazza Navona. The main basin is by Giacomo Della Porta (1575 - 76). The statue of the "Etiope in lotta con un delfino" (Ethiopian struggling with a dolphin) is by Giovanni Antonio Mari (1654) on a sketch by Bernini (not shown in this picture). The masks are copies of the originals which were originally in Piazza del Popolo (Fontana del Trullo) and were later removed by the new management of Giuseppe Valadier. The originals are now in the Giardino del Lago in Villa Borghese. The four tritons blowing into shells are also copies of the XVI century originals, originally in the Fontana del Trullo in piazza del Popolo and moved here in the XVI century, now in the Giardino del Lago in Villa Borghese.
