Description
Rome, Italy. The church Santa Maria in Aracoeli seen from the base of the flight of steps. Built over the Temple of Giunone Moneta which was on the highest part of the Capitol hill, the "Arx", and over a monastery of the VII century known as Santa Maria in Capitolio. The name "Araceli" is a probable corruption of "Santa Maria in Arce" (on the "Arx") with maybe contribution of a legend wanting here a supposed apparition of the Virgin to Octavianus (Ara coeli = sky altar). The present faade dates back to the XIII century, the three portals date back to the XIV century but were reworked in the two following centuries. The temple dedicated to Juno "the admonisher" was later used as a mint, the which gave the meaning of "coin" to the word "moneta".
