Description
Rome, Italy. The bronze statue dedicated to Cola di Rienzo (Cola Rienzi, Cola di Rienzi, Cola de Rienzi, Nicola di Lorenzo Gabrini) erected in 1887 on the place where he was killed in a riot in 1354 (according to other sources he was killed in a building in the Piazza del Campidoglio). The basement is made with ancient Roman fragments to signify his dream of reconstitution of the old Roman constitutional order. The statue is by Girolamo Masini (1871), the basement by Francesco Azzurri (1887). During the XIX century Cola di Rienzo became a symbol of anticlericalism, and this is one of the few anticlerical monuments erected in Rome after the Unification. The church in the background is Santa Maria in Aracoeli.
