Description
Rome, Italy. The church Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Founded in VI century over a Roman temple, Ara massima di Ercole invitto (Herculis Invicti Ara Maxima, Great Altar of Unconquered Hercules), built first in 495 b.C. The romanesque façade dates back to pope Calistus II (or Callixtus II, 1119 - 1124). The porch with protyrum is the only medieval porch in Rome with arches on pilasters. The bell tower with mullioned windows with two or three lights dates also back to the XII century. The porch hosts the famous Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth)
