Description
Rome, Italy. Façade of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, by Alessandro Galilei (1732 - 1735). Taking inspiration from the solution employed by Pietro da Cortona with the church of Santa Maria in via Lata, Galilei creates an "empty" façade with a vestibulum and an arched loggia above it. San Giovanni is still nowadays the official cathedral of Rome. At the right of the church the Palazzo Lateranense by Domenico Fontana (1586 - 1589) for Sixtus V. Since 1929 the building and the church (with all the bigger compound of the Lateran) have extraterritorial status. Since 1967 the Palazzo Lateranense is the Rome Vicar's residence.
