Description
Rome, Italy. Ponte Fabricio, built in 62 b.C. (by curator viarum Lucius Fabricius) was the first Roman bridge in masonry and is the oldest Roman bridge nowadays. It is almost entirely original. During the 2nd century the marble cover was substituted with bricks. Pope Innocent XI Odescalchi in year 1679 made some restoration works to the bridge, substituting the old parapet in bronze and marble with a parapet in bricks. Part of the original inscription is still visible on the marble arches. The bridge is also known in Rome as "Ponte Quattro Capi" from the two ancient Roman four-headed herms on the left bank side. Also called "pons Judaeorum" for the vicinity of the Jewish quarter (later to become the Jewish Ghetto). The tower on the right is the Torre Caetani.
