Description
Fontana del Tritone by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Hotel Bernini Bristol in Piazza Barberini in Rome, by night. The fountain was created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in travertine, in the years 1642 - 1643 on commission by pope Urban VIII Barberini in the square the name of which since 1625 was associated with the family. The papal coat of arms of the Barberini family (with the bees) is visible under the giant shell, sustained by the scaly tails of four dolphins and sustaining a Triton blowing into a shell kept above his head. The Hotel Bernini Bristol was designed by Ettore Rossi, 1943. The building is criticised for its lack of coherence with the rest of the square and as background for the Fontana del Tritone.
