Description
Rieti (Italy), Piazza Cavour. The Monument to the Lira (2003, detail). A competition in which took part more than two thousand persons was won by Roman artist Daniela Fusco. Italy, represented as usual as a woman with a tower as hat (so called "Italia turrita") keeps a giant copy of the 1 lira coin of 1951. On the pedestal various ancient coins in use in the Italian peninsula in the last centuries. The statue was cast by Fonderie Caggiati using 2.2 millions of old 200 lire coins. Rieti has been chosen because it is considered to be "at the center of Italy".
