Description
Rome, Italy. Monument to Giordano Bruno in Campo dei Fiori. The philosopher who was burned alive in this square by the Catholic Church on February 17th, 1600 is depicted in his uniform of Dominican friar while keeping in his hands his writings. The monument, by Ettore Ferrari (1887) is an example of the (rare) anticlerical monuments in Rome after the Unification, Giordano Bruno having become a symbol and a martyr of the freedom of thought and of the oppression of the Church(es) against free thought. In the pedestal eight medals depict eight other "heretics" killed by the Catholic, the Luteran and the Calvinist Church. The monument was built with money collected all over Europe.
