Description
Rome, Italy. Fontana delle Naiadi and left building of the two buildings that constitute the exedra in Piazza della Repubblica, in Rome. Built on design by Gaetano Koch (1887 - 98), the exedra repeats exactly the semicircle of the great ancient Roman exedra with tier of seats which was used for gymnastic exhibitions, just outside of the main buildings of the Baths. The Fontana delle Naiadi (1888) is decorated at the center with a group called the Glauco (19011 - 12), and by four groups of naiads (1901), all by Mario Rutelli. The group visible in this picture is the Ninfa dei Laghi, who holds near her body a swan. The four naiads groups were deemed to be too "daring" at the beginning of the XX century and were object of a judicial dispute to remove them for obscenity.
