Description
Piazza del Quirinale, Fontana di Monte Cavallo. The fountain takes his name from another name of the Quirinale Hill, cavallo meaning horse, which name in turn comes from the giant statues of the horses which were in the Bath of Constantine here on the Quirinale Hill. Pope Sixtus V moved the statues at the center of the square, in perspective with the Strada Pia (the long perspective formed by via del Quirinale and via XX settembre which ends at Porta Pia) to adorn a fountain which received the Acqua Felice (water from a Roman Aqueduct restored by Pope Sixtus V). Pope Pius VI in 1786 had Giovanni Antinori change the orientation of the statues facing the Quirinale building and taking them apart to raise the Obelisk in the middle, which comes from the Mausoleo di Augusto. In 1818 Pope Pius VII had Raffaele Stern design a new fountain which makes use of a basin of the Campo Vaccino.
