Description
Attic of the fontana di Trevi in Rome, by night. The name comes from the nearby church of Santa Maria in Trivio (Trivio means crossing of three streets) in the nearby Piazza dei Crociferi. The original fountain was oriented toward piazza dei Crociferi and the name "di Trevi" is a corruption of "di (S. Maria in) Trivio". The three popes during which the work was made obviously left their marks on the statue: Clemens XII Corsini (1730 - 1740, plate in the upper part and Corsini coat of arms on the top), Benedictus XIV Lambertini (1740 - 1758, inscription in big golden letters) and Clemens XIII Rezzonico (1758 - 1769, inscription in the niche behind Ocean, not visible in this picture). Works for the fountain begun in 1732 and ended only in 1762.
The main subject is the statue of Ocean, on a shell-shaped coach pulled by two sea horses, one "placido" and the other "agitato", as a reference to the calm or rough state of the sea. The sea horses are in turn driven by tritons (sea kings). In the two niches near Ocean, the statues of Salubrity and Fertility by Filippo Della Valle.
The main architect of the fountain is Nicola Salvi. The main group with Ocean, coach, horses and tritons is by Pietro Bracci (1759 - 1762).
